Notes, Commentary, Restoration: 
Not too widespread, these would be hung from the wire before a signal is put up.  Installing the signal itself then becomes a simple task of opening the box, plugging it in, and closing the box.  A good idea, for sure, but the actual usefulness of such a system is much less so.

This unit has the more common 1 1/2" serrated pipe adapter on the top instead of a direct mount to a span wire balancer (hanger). It is complete except for the signal head flange...IE the only part critical to this box being usable.
